Moving from ESA to JSA was created by Zinny
My son had an Assessment over 2 years ago and the result was he was placed in the WRAG group to get ESA for 2 years which ends at end of December. For various reasons,(he has mental health problems), he did not appeal. He gets housing costs in addition to ESA. At end of December will the DWP transfer him (and his housing costs) over to JSA and give him an appointment at the local job centre? Or does he himself have to apply for JSA ?
Since his ESA will end on 30th December should he visit the Job Centre before Christmas to make an appointment or what does he do? What has happened to other claimants when ESA ends?

Hi e,

Although ESA Awards (WRAG or SG) come with a recommended period before reassessment, (The Prognosis) which in your Son's case seems to be a 2 year prognosis, this is only a recommendation, and his WRAG status will remain in place until he is reassessed and a fresh decision is made.

He does not have to do anything to instigate his reassessment, although if he feels that his limitations have changed/deteriorated to such an extent that he should now be in The SG rather than the WRAG, he can request a review by letter.

As a result of any reassessment or requested review, he will have to fill out a fresh ESA50, and may or may not have to take part in a face to face "Medical".

Again, as with his previous assessment, there are three possible outcomes :

He can be placed into The SG.

Remain in The WRAG.

Or, be found fit for work.

So, his ESA cannot "end" until he has been reassessed , and only then if he is found fit for work.
