I am in the process of completing my claim for P.I.P., after receiving the higher rate of the mobility element of D.L.A. since 1999.
I'm a bit confused as to the 'how far can you walk' part of the questionnaire.
I suffer with arthritis in my feet and hips (hands also), so I suffer with constant pain when I walk any distance at all.
Does the question 'how far can you walk' mean before you feel pain? If so, seeing as my pain is constant, should I put down 'less than 20 metres'?

Hi Claire,

DWP argue that you do not have to be without pain in order to be judged able to carry out an activity. DLA used the term 'severe discomfort' but there is no such description with PIP. It is up to you to show that the amount of pain you suffer is such that it prevents you from walking even 20m reliably, repeated, safely etc (if this is the case, of course!).

Nothing on this board constitutes legal advice - always consult a professional about specific problems

Hello Claire.
Iv got R.A. Tell them you cant walk more than 20 metres with out pain and stopping for a rest. If you go for an assessment, dont let the h.p. suggest a higher amount like 30 metres. Stick with less than 20 metres.
Also, your medication is taken into account. Are you taking a high enough dose of DMARDs, NSAIDs and Painkillers to back up your claim.

Hi
On my first DLA claim I put 0 metres as I can't walk at all without severe pain and discomfort.
If this is the case for you I suggest you put down zero as well. Obviously you tick the under 20 metres box but in the supporting info you state you cannot walk at all without experiencing severe pain and discomfort. Also do you have sticks or whatever or use a wheelchair?

My experience was that when i continued to look blank at how many meters i can walk etc.. I was asked for how long.
I remembered something on here, I think about time travelled normal walking speed etc and how at the time I had thought mine out.
So be aware about the time it takes to get from your lounge to next room etc question (although how anyone knows how big my house is???).
I said 30 secs and as I was observed walking only about 5 meters max, at a time, supported and very slowly, the decision maker chose to agree with my less than 20 meters tick on the application even though the HP said she observed me walking 36meters slowly and linked arms with my partner.

Hi
I also have been receiving the DLA higher rate mobility since mid 1990s due to contracting polio, my difficulty when walking any distance is the fact that as a result, of my lower limb weakness my foot drops and my toes catch on the floor causing me to trip up and fall so whenever I do walk I run the risk of falling, not sure what to put in this walking distance, I use a walking stick as well as having my husband with me whenever I go out as when I fall I cannot get up without help.
I also use a wheelchair or my scooter If I have to walk any distance. I do have plenty of shoes which show damaged tips to toe part caused by tripping would these shoes do as evidence?
