can I work a few hours per week whilst on ESA? was created by Haseena
Hi there,
I am self employed & am wanting to work 2-3hrs per week, "provided" my doctor is in agreement. My doctor has been wanting to sign me off work for the time being. But I am wanting to work 2-3hrs per week with some support, if possible.
Is this possible whilst I am on ESA? If I applied for ESA whilst working 2-3hrs per week, would that cause more problems for me? I'm guessing it would further complicate the ESA process.
Please let me know what your thoughts are.
I would deeply appreciate a prompt response.
Thank you very much

Hi
You cannot apply for ESA if you are working since you need a fit note to start a claim.

Whilst Foss's comment, above, is correct, it is possible to carry out a few hours of 'permitted work' once awarded ESA. This is not without its problems and any such work has to be authorised by a DWP Decision Maker before you start.

Our son does permitted, support agreed work for a maximum of 14 hours per week. The hours are dependant on the amount he can earn etc. You can do this with your GP etc support. However, he is due to be reviewed at the end of this year, brought forward by 4 years so things may change. His work has to be entirely at his choice and they have to accept he may not be in, or may leave etc. Therefore a job/work cannot rely too much on your input.
He claims CB ESA and has done so since transferring from IB when ESA first started
