Motability for mental health? was created by mrsoptic
Hi, I just wondered if the mods, or anyone else knows anyone who's had enhanced or standard mobility for pip who are applying for mental health issues?

We are applying for my husband at the moment and he is suffering with bi polar and anxiety and depression. We have stated on his forms that he can NEVER go out anywhere without the assistance of myself as it causes him a great deal of stress and if he's forced into the situation he has panic attacks. We sent a consultant clinic letter also that stated he couldn't go out and it even stated that he needed a support worker put in place to help with this for his own independence.

We had his face to face this week also and they did the classic "your friend lives over the road and comes over to you and asks you for directions to the shop up the road, can you tell him the way?" My husband couldn't even make eye contact at the asssment and mumbled after about 5 min that he couldn't because of the pressure in having to talk to someone or even the thought of having to socialise with someone. The HP seemed pretty convinced by this and noted it down on his computer. We are still awaiting his decision but we just wondered if people can be awarded enhanced rates for Motability because of issues like my husbands or is it more physical disabilities?

We certainly have members who have received an award of PIP Mobility symptoms but it has become harder due to recent DWP guidance which is now supported by two out of three Upper Tier Tribunal Judges.

For a Standard award you will need to show

e. Cannot undertake any journey because it would cause overwhelming psychological distress to the claimant. 10 points.

An Enhanced is award currently unlikely unless the claimant can also score points in the Moving Around activity as the 12 point activity (f) is currently being seen as a navigation issue and therefore a cognitive problem not a mental health one.

Thanks for the reply Gordon. No we stated that he has no issues what so ever when it comes to physically walking and getting about. I said to the HP if you give him a long house he will walk as far as you want him to walk he just cant go outside! I just wondered as going off the DWP points score surely he would meet the descriptor for the 12 points but i have read about lots of mental health people only scoring 10 because it was mental health rather then physical health. It seems like a huge flaw in their own system really.

We are hoping for an enhanced daily living as he does require a lot of care and cannot cook, doesn't want to eat when given food, cant medicate himself and wont go out or even answer the phone to anyone. The HP did read out what the points were when we were at the assessment also which i thought was strange. He would ask if he could take nutrition for example and we said he can physically but the HP said yes but does he eat it when its put in front of him? We replied saying no he doesn't as he isn't hungry due to his depressive nature. He did this on a few questions and almost seemed to want to score us points. Are we reading too much into things that maybe we got a sympathetic HP or is this the normal?

I'm afraid I've given up trying to second guess what award has been made based on the assessment!

Best of luck
