PIP and cancer claim

My ex has got advanced lung and lymph cancer, he has been told that it is not curable only treatable, would this term mean terminal?
I rang up PIP to claim, and was told that as we couldn't say if he only had six months to live that the claim would be dealt with as any other claimant . I have been told that his claim would be fast tracked? Or have I been given the wrong advice? The form I find rather complicated (probably due to my age )
Any thoughts on this subject would be gratefully received as long as they are correct !

Hi O,
Welcome to Benefits and Work

As B&W is not really a chat forum where anyone can post advice, and you will receive a response to your query from a Moderator, (Mod) you can rely on the advice that you are given by the Mod being accurate.
If we don't know the answer to a query, we will say so, we don't guess !!!

I am sorry to hear of your Ex's cancer diagnosis !

DWP are strict on this issue where the prognosis must be 6 months or less and a DS1500 Form must be issued by a G.P., Cancer Nurse,Consultant, etc !!
If they have a terminal prognosis of 6 months or less and a DS1500 confirming this, they can claim PIP under "Special Rules" and their claims should be fast-tracked resulting in at least an Enhanced Daily Living PIP Award (Possibly Enhanced PIP Mobility Award also)
If they do have a 6 months or less prognosis, and DWP are rigid on this, they need to obtain a DS1500 from their G.P. , Consultant, etc which confirms this.
I would make some copies of The DS1500 to keep safe, and provide the original.
With a Special Rules claim they should inform DWP at the start of their PIP Claim.
See : How to claim PIP
If they do claim under Special Rules, which is also covered in our : PIP Claims Guide. (2nd Link down the page) , they should not have to go through the full PIP Assessment, i.e. they should not have to fill in a PIP 2 Form or take part in a face to face.
If they are not claiming under "Special Rules", they will go through the assessment processes, and you should still refer to our guides above.

They could also Contact MacMillan who do have Welfare Advisers who can help with "Benefits" claims as a result of cancer.
You should Bookmark/Favourite this page in your Internet Browser now. That way you can return to this topic easily to pose any further queries that you may have by replying to the topic.

Thanks in anticipation of your future co-operation in keeping all your PIP related queries to this topic !

Hi O,
O.K. !!

Is the Dr/Consultant/G.P. aware that if a prognosis of 6 months or less is appropriate, that a DS1500 is needed to fast track his PIP claim ?
Maybe, MacMillan could help further !!
