HI ALL,

Hubby rec. letter inviting him to claim for pip 7 weeks before his 65th birthday. Is this normal to leave it so late?

If he fails he will not be able to claim pip again as he is 65 in 2 wks!

phoned DWP they could not answer why his claim had been left so late and we were told if he fails then he can claim for Attendance Allowance!

Hi Vm and Welcome to the forum, you might want to have a look at the following FAQ which explain where everything is

Welcome to Benefits and Work

Everyone adult on DLA who was less 65 years of age in April 2013 will be required to apply for PIP at some stage, even if they are over 65 before that happens. We have never found any logic for the order in which people are selected, it seems to be random. Now that this process has started there is no way that your husband can continue on DLA, his claim would be closed if you did not claim PIP. As you were told, if he fails to be awarded PIP, he would have the option of claiming AA - an option that people under the age of 65 do not have.

You can start the PIP process by phoning DWP (it is possible, but more difficult to do this in writing instead). I suggest you have all relevant information to hand when you make the call - what you need is explained in our PIP guide.

PIP help for claimants

After the phone call a PIP2 form will be sent out to you, you will have 4 weeks from the date of that letter to get the form completed and returned. A 2 week extension is usually granted by DWP to anyone who phones and asks for one.

If it would be easier, it is permissible to type all answers on the computer, then print out and attach to the PIP form. It is vital that the same form is returned as it will be marked with a unique barcode identifying the claimant.

If/when, having read the guide, you have further questions please reply to this message and we will do our best to help.
