Use of Spirometry Tests in DWP IIDB ASSESSMENTS was created by National Union of Mineworkers
Despite repeated requests from our Union(The NUM) the DWP still insist on forcing sick ex miners to undertake Spirometry tests when attending for Pneumoconiosis Assessments for Industrial Injuries Disablement Benefit. This does not indicate how much dust is IN THE LUNGS so is of little or no value.
If the Miner is not accompanied by a Union Official they are brow beaten into taking the test which often leaves them, dizzy, nauseous and gasping for breath. One retired miner attending for a COPD assessment was recently turned down because he refused the test because he had recently been in hospital. The DWP tried to "cover their back" by citing a test he was supposed to have had in 2003, but he has never put in a claim before!!
The DWP Web Site as a matter of interest states that if the claimant suffers from Pneumoconiosis he will be sent for an Xray. We have no evidence of this in Yorkshire.
