hello all,

Im 62 and on ESA support and DLA higher for both care and mobility. Im a qualified hypnotherapist, and though I know and accept that I will never be in full time practice I have taken the plunge and put a website online and bought public liability insurance, for the princely total sum of £174. Im already a member of various governing bodies. Im offering a session at my home, for 1- 1.5 hours a week, in vey specialised areas. I understand from reading through all the blurb on ESA that Im allowed to work up to 16 hours a week, though it will be only 1 to 1.5 hours, and that I can earn £115 after expenses. Essentially I will be self employed ? Not sure about that one, so may have to pay tax and ni contributions ? Is there anyone on here that is in a similar situation re benefits and self employed ? I am really worrying now that when I call them they will stop or sanction my benefits, I live on my own, so no other support financially. I think the first thing they may do is send me for an assessment for PIP and that worries me too, as Im on high DLA for both mobility and care and really frightened I will loose my car, which will totally isolate me from my family. If anyone has any thoughts on this please share with me. Im also wondering if there is any grant available for people who are disabled and starting self employment, which might help if they take my benefits away while they look in to things, I really dont want to get in to rent arrears if my housing benefit is suspended. Thank you for reading

You cannot work and continue to receive ESA unless the work that you are doing is accepted by the DWP as being Permitted Work.

You must contact the DWP about what you are doing, they will send you a PW1 form to complete. It would be unusual for them to reject a request to perform PW.

You do not need to inform the DLA department about your starting work, but it may disadvantage you if you do not and the work you are doing is considered to be at odds with the reasons you are receiving an award. If you do notify them then I would expect you to invited to claim PIP.

Although it's not something that we deal with on the forum, my understanding is that you would have to register with HMRC.

There's a guide to PW in the ESA section of the Members area. You need to be aware of the rules regarding income and working hours as exceeding the PW limits can result in your ESA claim being closed.
