PIP mobility. Asked about time not distance. was created by LaurenB
Just had my PIP assessment. When asked about mobility I was asked to say how long in minutes I could walk, not how long in distance. I was totally unprepared for this, especially as there was no indication on my application form that I would be required to provide timed estimates.
Not sure if this is normal procedure but a warning to others (just in case).

The legal test is the distance that the claimant can walk, but if you can estimate the walking speed then you can derive the distance from the time it takes the claimant.

My HP said I could walk for 3 minutes, and it's on my medical assessment report. I never said that verbally or in writing. Also, my rejected MR stated I could walk 25 metres in 3 minutes; the MR is just guessing. No wonder I am going for an oral appeal, as so many lies and being banded about it's like Walter Mitty land at the DWP!

Average walking speeds for a healthy adult vary from 72m-90m a minute so if the assessor has stated 25m in three minutes then they are assessing you as being unable to walk in a timely manner and likely to an acceptable standard, both of which are terms that come under the "reliability" criteria.
