ESA - Severe Disability Allowance was created by Alice
Good afternoon,
I applied for PIP and ESA last June. I was awarded higher rate DL and lower rate mobility. For ESA I am in the support group.
I appealed the PIP mobility decision and have just had a letter confirming that I will be awarded higher rate.
My question is about the Severe Disability top up for ESA. I don't know much about it and can't find too much information about it. I live in my own home that is mortgaged, alone and have no dependants.
Could you please help me out with figuring out what this ESA top up is and how I go about claiming it?
Many thanks x

To receive the Premiums you must be receiving Income Related ESA in part or in whole. ESA(IR) is dependant on your household income, your savings and assets, and any hours that your partner works. See
Asset and savings rule for ESA(IR)
24 hour work rule for ESA(IR)
To receive the Severe Disability Premium you need to be receiving an enabling benefit such as a PIP Daily Living award, to be loving alone or considered to be living alone and no one must be receiving Carers Allowance against you PIP.
You should also be eligible for the Enhanced Disability Premium, referred to as the Disability Income Guarantee on the ESA letters.

Hi Gordon
Thank you for your reply. From your previous message, since I don't have any savings or a partner and I do live alone and I am in receipt of ESA(IR). I am also receiving PIP enhanced rates for both mobility and daily living. No one receives carers allowance for me either.
Do you know how I go about applying for these premiums and also if they are backdated?
Thanks
Alice

Sorry but are you saying that you know that you are receiving ESA(IR), or are you assuming that you do because you meet the criteria?
Based on your post the DWP should have contacted you, the SD Premium does require you to complete a form (IS10) but you should be able to do this over the phone, the Premiums should be backdated to the date that you became eligible to receive them.

Hi
I've just looked over my ESA letter and I am indeed receiving contribution based ESA which would explain this. I don't really understand this decision so I will ask the DWP for claification on why I am not on income related ESA and take it from there.
Thanks for your help.

ESA(CB) is always paid if the claimant is eligible, you would be looking to receive an ESA(IR) top-up with the Premiums.
Were you working immediately before claiming ESA or were you transferred from another benefit such as Incapacity Benefit or Severe Disablement Allowance?
