DHSS. Overpayment was created by rhill1954
I am on ESA & am a Carer for my 89 year old Dad; I applied for careers allowance n 2012 & was paid the full amount; In 2016 my payment was roughly £100 less than usual. I rang only to be told that I shouldn’t have been paid full amount as I was on ESA. Heard nothing more from them until his morning when I recieved a letter stating I had been paid over £6,0000 between 2012-16. When I heard nothing from them in 2016 I assumed that it was a mistake on their part & they weren’t doing anything about it. I truly was not aware at the time I as being overpaid until I rang them and n 2016. My question is - How I see it they are partly to blame & should I offer to repay half of the overpayment or am I responsible for all of the overpayment. As you can get image I’m in a bit of a state being confortated with a letter like this. Any advise would be greatly appreciated

I' limited in the advice I can give you, I strongly recommend that you get face to face advice, do an internet search for "welfare advice" with your postcode, town or county.
Don't offer to pay back the money, you may be required to but that is another matter.
You had a responsibility as part of your receiving ESA to notify then of any changes to your income so;
Did you contact the ESA office dealing with your claim when you received the CA award?
Can you show that the ESA office dealing with your claim were notified by the Carers Unit about your CA award?
If you can't then it's likely that you will be held responsible for the overpayment.
