Appointee v Representative at PIP Tribunal was created by Dawn Peace
I have tried to search but haven't found what i am looking for - so i hope someone can help. PIP tribunal for young adults (16/17). Does the young adult/child have to attend the tribunal or can the appointee speak on their behalf. I thought the appointee couldn't but a representative could. Can anyone shed any light. Many thanks

The simplest solution is for you to write to the Judge in charge of your hearing c/o the Tribunal Service, if you would prefer the claimant not having to attend, then ask for permission for this to happen, if you are in two minds about then ask for their opinion, in either case, mention that you are their appointee.

Thank you Gordon - that is really helpful.
The biggest issue is that i am not his appointee - as DWP felt that he was mentally capable to manage. He is a 16 year old with Type 1 diabetes. I am trying to decide whether i need to put myself forward as his representative - so that i can speak at the tribunal. Most 16 years olds will not fair well at tribunal - and the care and support he needs to manage his condition requires my input.

You can be his representative but you cannot be his Representative so you need to be careful how you word your letter. The former is a layperson assisting the claimant with their claim, the latter is a fully trained Welfare Rights worker with detailed knowledge of the relevant benefit law.
