Riding a bicycle to help with COPD?

Riding a bicycle to help with COPD? was created by UncleBuck
Hello,
can I get some advice, please?

I have COPD and several months ago I had my lung function tested as being at quite a bit below 50%. Several weeks ago, I was awarded ESA again.

COPD is, of course, a chronic, long-term, progressive illness that cannot be cured or reversed.

So my doctor has advised me to get more exercise to try to slow down my COPD's progression. Apart from walking, cycling has been mentioned as being one of the best exercises for COPD, as this can limit the breathlessness I get when walking - and which my doctor said seemed a good idea in the context of my COPD.

My concern is that if I start to cycle, it may seem to the DWP that there has been a change in my circumstances, that my COPD condition appears to be improving. Whereas, my COPD condition can never improve - the cycling would actually be to help with this goal of trying to slow down my COPD's progression.

So should I let the DWP know I wish to cycle for the reasons given above, and would it be a good idea to send them a doctor's letter (which I;m sure he will write) to confirm all this?
thanks

Why were you awarded ESA, what Descriptors did you meet?

If they were ones that could be construed as being in some way related to your cycling then it could be an issue, two spring to mind although the first is tenuous; Mobilising and Going Out but this is all about your conditions improving and you are saying that this has not happened and would not happen, all you are doing is reducing the rate of deterioration.

Reporting a Change will almost certainly result in your receiving a new ESA50 and having to attend a face to face assessment, the new Decision, whatever it is will supersede your current one.

Dear Uncle Buck,
Using an exercise bike indoors at home would be a prescribed therapy rather than a change that you would have to report .

Hi Gordon,

You understand my concern, and I take your point that by cycling, issues may arise in that it may be construed as meaning that I no longer have limitations on some descriptors.

However, from everything I've read/been told about COPD from doctors, specialists, etc, and have personally experienced with COPD, it cannot be reversed nor cured, one can only try to slow down it's progression.

So cycling will not reverse nor improve my condition, it will only help to limit the breathlessness I get, especially when walking. I will still have the same limitations on any of the descriptors I met. As you said, all I would be doing by cycling is helping to reduce the rate of deterioration.

i just wondered if I should let the DWP know about the cycling in advance to avoid any possible misunderstanding or unnecessary hassle, but it seems that by doing so, it might also unnecessarily stir up a hornets nest by giving the impression I am referring to a change of circumstances - when I actually won't be.

So I guess, if I start to cycle, it's best to just say nothing.
