New Style ESA claim was created by Mrs Bloxby
I am retiring due to ill health on 30 June, until then I will be receiving full pay which is made up of SSP and my salary. My employer has confirmed I will be provided with an SSP1 form at the end of my employment.
I have had to retire due to a degenerative disc problem which is causing chronic pain and mobility issues and I have had hearing loss since 2010 but have recently suffered sudden complete bilateral hearing loss and am now profoundly deaf. I don't have sign language and my lip reading skills are very minimal. I require assistance from my husband and family for all aspects of daily living.
I have received conflicting advice re when I should apply for new style ESA contribution based. Can you advise should I wait until after my retirement on 30 June, someone said I should start the process a few weeks prior to this?
Also if I have retired how can I get sick notes from the doctor? Should I ask my doctor for a letter instead?
Sorry for the long post, I don't understand the benefits system and am completely confused.
Thank you.

Nothing on this board constitutes legal advice - always consult a professional about specific problems

Hi Mrs B
You state in your post that you are retiring due to ill health on 30th June, when you retire on the 30th June will you be receiving state pension or will it be a company pension?
Without knowing all the facts we cannot give you advice as it can be quite complicated as any occupational or personal pension would be taken into account when claiming 'new style' or Contributory ESA. Contribution based ESA has a 12 month time limit unless you are placed in the Support Group in which case the time limit does not apply and you will continue to receive 'new style' or Contributory ESA for as long as you meet the qualifying conditions.
As this is an open forum we cannot give specific advice and would advise you to contact your local welfare right unit/Citizens Advice/Age UK for specific personal advice.

Hi Gary
Thank you for your reply. I'm 58 and therefore no state pension, I will have two occupational pensions £35 per month and £210 per month.
I have been assessed by SALUS the NHS Occupational Health, as unfit to work and have a copy of their report, my GP also advised I should retire. I'm on long term sick leave and will be until my retirement date.
What I'm mainly struggling to get my head round is
a. When should I apply, ie do I wait until after my retirement date of 30 June
b. Do I get a letter from my GP to go with my claim, if I'm not working would my GP still provide sick notes?
Thank you

As previously advised, you can make a claim for NS ESA as soon as your Statutory Sick Pay ends.
You will need a Fit Note from your GP to certify you as being Unfit for Work, speak to them about what support they may be able to provide you with your claim.
