Requesting more time to complete PIP form

Hello everyone,

I’m wondering if anyone has any thoughts and/or experiences of asking for more time to fill in this 40 page beastie. My partner has Parkinson’s so I’m completing the form on his behalf (and told the DWP this when I called to initiate the claim), and he thinks we’ll need more time to fill the form in well (thanks to the incredibly informative guides available here).

Does a request for more time go against us in any way?
Do we have to provide reasons why?
Or is it best to crack on and get it done?

I’m inclined towards the latter :)

Hi Magdelena

Only you can decide whether or not you need an extension. Asking for an extension will not go against you if you request one. The extension time is an additional two weeks. You only have to say you need more time.

Ive done it with 2 PIP forms.

I wasnt asked for a reasn why- but its an obvs question to expect being asked I suppose.

What I didnt like about it was there was no confirmation of the extension. Id have felt a lot less exposed if I had it on paper when the extension deadline was.

In both cases I got the extension- but without it on paper as confirmation I felt very exposed to the risk that the agreed extension could just "dissapear" and I had no proof it ever existed.

Other than that exposure to risks, there was not downside I found.

When you request an extension, they usually tell you when it will be extended to, it does not go against you when you request an extension, as BIS stated they will give you a two week entension but usually only once. I always ask for the name of the person I spoke to and get them to spell it if you are unsure how to spell it, also write down date and time, ..... goodl uck

Flappy the bat, thank you. I totally understand that sense of exposure and appreciate the heads up about it. Awareness goes some way towards softening the worry :)

Gary, thanking you too. I’ll be sure to document all details. I’ll take any luck that’s going ;)
