Help with what to write for PIP Mobility Activity was created by RB
Hi, I am in the process of getting my doctor to add a letter to support my Mandatory Reconsideration Request regarding the denial of the Mobility component of PIP. Previously I had the lower DLA rate awarded me.
I have Chronic Fatigue Syndrome
Reading through the descriptors I am unsure how someone assesses when someone like me has variable days of mobility. On very good days (with the aid of a stick) maybe I could get to 200 metres; stopping to rest on the way. But then, there are days when I cannot get out of bed at all.
The descriptors are here. How does anyone work out how to assess me from these as I am so variable in my capabilities?
Moving around.
a. Can stand and then move more than 200 metres, either aided or unaided. 0 points.
b. Can stand and then move more than 50 metres but no more than 200 metres, either aided or unaided. 4 points.
c. Can stand and then move unaided more than 20 metres but no more than 50 metres. 8 points.
d. Can stand and then move using an aid or appliance more than 20 metres but no more than 50 metres. 10 points.
e. Can stand and then move more than 1 metre but no more than 20 metres, either aided or unaided. 12 points.
f. Cannot, either aided or unaided, –
(i) stand; or
(ii) move more than 1 metre. 12 points.

You will have been assessed on how you are on the majority of days so you need to explain how your walking varies and how many days you are affected in this way.
You should also have a look at the reliability criteria, so as an example; the time it takes you to walk a particular distance, including stops, could also be a factor, you also need to be able to repeat any distance that you can walk.
See our PIP Claim guide for more details, there is a section on fluctuating conditions.
