DLA to PIP was created by Wiggy56
I am my wife's carer and so I have just been through the DLA to PIP process, including a home visit. Even with all the templates I found here I found it difficult to fill in the forms let only someone who is suffering like my wife. Well she got her brown envelop this morning and surprise,surprise it has been reduced so I will have to go through the mandatory appeal thingy. As I don't agree with the mobility element ie: if I gave my wife a map it would go in the glove box, she cannot understand a map, to plan a journey, if she was able it would be a taxi.
So I have been gong through your lustrous papers and my head is about to burst I cannot understand it. So please is there someone I can talk to to help us, through this the old paperwork use to say how much and for what now I cannot see if there is an amount for care only a statement that 'If you've a carer, this will not change', but it don't state if the allowance is going to be paid. We live in Manchester, we had to use Welfare rights in our last appeal, but I cannot find them any more. Therefore please can someone point us in the right direction and good luck to all those who are about to put a claim in.

Hi S

In case you are not aware, your real name appears to be showing in the forum, if you want to change this then follow the instructions in the following FAQ

My full name is showing, how can I stop it?

The first stage to challenging a Decision is for you to request a Mandatory Reconsideration, this needs to be done in writing to the DWP, within one month of the Decision, to the office that dealt with your claim, have a look at our PIP MR & Appeal guide for details of the process, the PIP area also has template letters that you can use to make the request with.

www.benefitsandwork.co.uk/help-for-claimants/pip

You should contact the DWP for a copy of the assessment report if you have not already done so, I would phone them but again follow up the request in writing. Once you have the assessment report you will have a better understanding of how the DWP Decision Maker has come to their conclusions and will then be able to argue against them.

Your primary task is to show that you meet the criteria, there are many reasons you may have failed, you need to address each of these but don't get bogged down in criticising the assessment report unless you can clearly show that it is incorrect, it is a lot easier to argue the facts of the situation;

"the assessor recorded that I walked 50m, I did but they have failed to document that I had to stop every 10m for a rest due to breathlessness"

than their opinions

"based on my observations of the claimant walking I believe that they can reliably walk more than 200m.

When you have a better idea of the issues with your claim, come back to the forum and we will do our best to help.

If you want some face to face help you need to google what is in your area. Obviously, there is the Citizen's Advice Bureau and you could contact someone like carers uk to see if they can help. Other than that you will need to google - try something like 'help with PIP in Manchester.'

I’m not sure if this is the case countrywide but you can usually access Welfare Rights through your local council. This does necessitate a measure of persistence though so don’t be surprised if you have to push whoever you speak to on the switchboard to find the contact number for you.
