Universal Credit and hours worked. was created by Chrissiefeeny
Hi Gordon.
My son was on ESA ( IR) support and moved areas, so had the claim UC.
His partner was told she would therefore have to sign on JS and look for work?
She didn't have to do this when he was on ESA.
They have 3 children, all below 10 years of age.
She was told if she did not sign on and look for work that his UC would be taken off him?
Also,,told by her " advisor" that she could do up to 25 hours of work a week, without it reducing his claim?
I'm fine with ESA and PIP but not clued up on UC at all.
Is this correct? I thought if she did more than 16 hours,it would impact his claim and if she did 24 hours or more, that his UC would be taken off him?
Totally flumoxed here.
Any help much appreciated.

ESA operated differently from UC, under ESA the partner was attached to the claim but only had limited responsibilities, attending a Work Focussed Interview every two or three years. Under UC the claim is made as a household and a partner is expected to seek work unless they are already working or are exempted from doing so.

UC does not have any restrictions on the hours that can be worked.

Thanks Gordon. SO,she can effectively work 24 hours a week and they will still retain his UC, housing Benefit and Council tax reduction?
I would have thought, if he was on IR, they would deduct his UC for every pound she earns, over a certain amount? Or, does that not apply on UC?

Yes, her earnings will be deducted from the UC, currently at the rate of 63p for every pound earned.
