Council tax arrears and ESA - help please was created by SharonKMW
Hello
Any advice would be so much appreciated. I am in receipt of housing and council tax benefit and ESA and in the support group. I also receive PIP. I know PIP isn’t means tested.
I have had a letter from the council (£2,000 council tax arrears) asking about my income and demanding full payment of the arrears. I spent years living in poverty whilst working (pre diagnosis’s) and had lots of unpaid leave and as a result adding to my debt. I am already paying £40 a month council tax (part current and arrears). My questions...are the disability elements of my ESA disregarded in terms of arranging to pay more off of my arrears? Also, do councils follow guidelines in relation to this? I have had a few sleepless nights over the letter and used to worry all the time about my inability to keep up with my bills when I was working and now I can’t work. Thank you so much

Nothing on this board constitutes legal advice - always consult a professional about specific problems

I'm afraid we do not advise on Council Tax, I would recommend that you get local face to face advice, do an internet search for "welfare advice" with your postcode, town or county.
