ESA Home Visit - mental health was created by SaneInside
Hello
I come here like many others tired and exhausted for having to deal with a benefits reassessment.
I've now managed to get to the point in which a home visit has been granted for the face to face assessment. Getting here wasn't easy but I won't confuse things with that tale.
So my claim relates to mental health issues and I've recently been given my appointment details; it's in a couple of weeks time. I have searched the health care professional's name and it would appear I'm to be assessed for mental health issues by a physical therapist.
Is it right that they can do that? Use someone not qualified in the field relating to your claim? I just feel like I've been stitched up through this whole process and have been on the receiving end of some very underhand tactics and this is yet another one
In the past when I've been assessed at home they've sent a Dr.
Also they seem to be moving with my assessment at a blistering pace compared to last time. Like I haven't had time to find my feet or get used to what's happening.
I don't have a good memory and so I write things down in a diary; dates, times and names of who I'm dealing with etc. but I can't find any record of the types of things I'll be asked and now I'm panicking if he's going to try and give me a physical exam for mental health problems
Is there any help or general advice on the details of what happens at a home visit? What should I do? I feel so scared about it all.
Thank you for your time.

Hello Sam
With regard to your assessment, yes it is common that they don't necessarily use someone qualified in the field, but all assessors have attended the mandatory training to be able to assess. Also although someone is a physical therapist you won't necessarily know if they are qualified in anything else. I would try not to focus on it, because you'll make yourself think it is going to be bad before it has taken place - which is easy to do especially if you've had bad experiences in the past.
Home visits are hard to come by so it can sometimes appear these happen at very short notice, but they only have to give you 7 days notice (unless one agrees to a cancellation).
If you have a look at our ESA guide it tells you all about the assessment process including the different questions you could be asked. There is one guide for physical health and one for mental health and learning difficulties.
Come back after you have taken a look if you have any further questions and we will try to help.

Sadly yes you can get someone who has very limited knowledge on mental health- I had an OT for mine - he didn't have a clue about eating disorders.
