ESA contribution based. Change of address

Hi could anyone help please?

My partner was awarded contribution based ESA recently. He has been put into the support group with a review in December 2020.

We recently moved and when he rang to notify change of address he was asked a lot of questions re finances. He was told that he would have to submit documents . They want documentation on the sale of his previous property, purchase of current property, bank statements and an explanation of what any residual monies will be spent on.

When we queried that we thought contribution based ESA is not means tested, she agreed but said that because he’s notified a change of circumstances, he has to supply the details for his own benefit in case he has to pay anything back.

He doesn’t receive any other benefit at all. We would supply them the information requested but feel we may have been misinformed.

Thanks in advance for any advice.

Don't assume the person that you spoke to knew what they were talking about :(

Wait and see but I would be very surprised if the DWP pursues the matter further but if they do write to you requesting the information then you must supply it or you risk your partner's ESA being suspended.

Hi Gordon

Just an update that might be useful for anyone else in same situation.

My partner had a call today from DWP saying he doesn’t have to supply the info as it’s contribution based ESA.

So...misinformation as we thought!

Thanks for helping
