Hi had a letter from HMRC asking if I should continue claiming working tax credits as a single person , can anyone advise me please I am registered disabled I have help from a friend who sometimes stays over if I am particularly bad , I pay all my own bills direct debit out of my bank account but this letter has scared me Almost threatening yet there’s no address to write to them and as far as I’m aware I’ve done nothing wrong , what should I do please ? Could it be a generic letter ? Kind regards

HMRC are obviously assuming you are a couple, it is not your information that they may ask for but your friends who may need to show that they live entirely separate from you.

We are limited in the advice we can give on Tax Credits as this is not a benefit that we support on the forum, you should get face to face advice from a trained adviser, do an internet search for "welfare advice" with your postcode, town or county.

Hello Susie,

I have received one of these too.

I am definitely single, no one staying over, other than female relatives that live close by.

I put it down to being widowed almost exactly 10 years ago, but now I think it may just be a fishing expedition, just to see if it shakes anyone to owning up to not actually being single.

I hope this helps a little.
