I lost my beloved aunt on Thursday after a short illness. I know for a fact that she has left me half her property, and the rest divided up amongst other family members, one of whom is in Australia until spring so unlikely will be able to sell before then. I will not receive anything until the property is sold, but how does this affect my benefits? The only means tested one I am on is esa non work related. I'm worried they are going to just stop everything. I'd normally research it online but I'm heartbroken and can't concentrate, please can you advise me. I even hate that I'm having to think about money, but I've spent a small fortune on trains up north and back home over the past couple of weeks, and cabs to and from hospital and my dads as I spent every night in my aunt's room.

Any equity in the house can potentially reduce or even remove your ESA payments if they are Income Related, the same will apply if you are receiving Housing Benefit.

The following has the basic rules.

Asset and savings rule for ESA(IR)

You will need to argue that any equity is not realisable as it property cannot be sold at this time.

This will not be an issue until your aunt's estate is settled and you actually receive the inheritance.
