Moving house to a universal credit area was created by Herbicat
Hi, I am currently in the support group for esa and also get PIP. I wanted to move to a different area but the area has universal credit. Someone told me if you are in the support group for esa you get put automatically in the support group for universal credit if you move. Is this true? Thanks

Hi alison orland

Welcome to the forum, you might want to have a look at the following FAQ which explains where everything is

Welcome to Benefits and Work

In case you are not aware, your real name appears to be showing in the forum, if you want to change this then follow the instructions in the following FAQ

My full name is showing, how can I stop it?

When you say you wanted to move to a different area, are we talking about a different local authority? The first question I would ask is, do you receive a severe disability premium in your ESA? if you do, then you will stay on legacy benefits.

If you do not receive SDP either in your ESA or HB then, if you move local authority areas you will have to make a claim for UC and you will need to complete a UC50 form.

In November 2018, the Government published its draft proposals for moving people currently receiving ESA on to Universal Credit. The Government have said that if you are in the Support Group or the Work-Related Activity Group on ESA then this will be carried over into your Universal Credit claim and you won’t need to go through an extra Work Capability Assessment.

At this moment in time the only area that I am aware of is Harrogate where the Government is moving people on legacy benefits over to UC. I believe the sample area was going to be about 10,000 claimants but this number may have been reduced.

Hi Gary,

Thanks for the heads up about the name! I will change that.

On my ESA letter it says 'extra money because ýou are severely disabled '. Is that the severe disability premium? There is also a line for 'extra money because of the disability income guarantee'.

Yes I am in the support group. I would be moving to a different local authority although it is not far from where I live. My own area does not have Universal Credit yet but the new area does.

By staying on legacy benefits do you mean I would stay on ESA if I moved to the new area even if it is a universal credit area?

Many thanks for your help,

Alison

Yes, "extra money because you are severely disabled" means that you are receiving the SD Premium.

Yes, you would stay on ESA and HB, your receiving the SD Premium means that you are currently barred from claiming UC.

Hi Gordon,
Thank you, that is interesting, I had no idea that was the case. Would I be right in thinking that situation would last until a reassessment was due for ESA? Would moving trigger a reassessment? I would not be claiming HB in the new area.

Thanks, Alison

If you are not claiming HB then it does not actually matter if you are receiving the Premium or not as you would not need to claim UC anyway.
