Disability premium was created by Fleur33
Hi everyone,

My stepson is severely disabled and requires round the clock care. He lives at home. He is very ill and receives both PIP high care and mobility. Also, ESA (support group)
Should he be claiming the disability premium and if so how does he apply?

Many thanks
Bobbi33

Hi Bobbi 33

When you say your stepson lives at home, do I take it he does not live alone or that those he lives with are not themselves in receipt of DLA middle care or PIP daily living or registered partially sighted.

If he does not live alone or those that live with him are not in any of the above then he will not be eligible for a severe disability premium in with his ESA.

As he is in the support group then he should be getting an enhanced disability premium of £16.80 pw, you will need to check the breakdown on his entitlement letter but I believe his ESA should be about £128.45 pw, if you cannot find his entitlement letter then contact ESA enquiry line: 0800 169 0310 and ask.

Hi Gary,

Thank you so much for replying. My husband and my Daughter (she also lives at home) both work full time but I get PIP both higher rate care and mobility and ESA contribution and placed in the support group as does my stepson. He lives with us at home but has his own 2 rooms which are specially adapted for him. I do not claim carers allowance for him.
I will check his ESA entitlement also. So confusing!!!

Thank you so much

Hi Bobbi 33

As you get CB ESA and in the suport group then your entitlement will be on going and your household income will not be taken into account to access your ESA. Ifl you are re-assessed and they either find you fit for work or placed in the WRA group, then your household income will then be taken into account. If you were on CB ESA and placed in the WRA group then your initial claim would only last one year before you go on to IR ESA, if eligible.

As for your stepson, he will not be able to claim SDP as there are other members of the house hold over 18 who are not on a qualifying benefit, but he should be receiving the enhanced disability premium (EDP) as he is in the support group and receives the enhanced daily living component of PIP (high care if he was on DLA).

The EDP can be awarded in addtion to any disability premium or severe disability premium that may be payable. It is payable only while the person who qualifies is under pension age.
