Income-based versus Contribution-based ESA was created by SarahM
I am unclear about the type of ESA I am on, specifically how it may or may not automatically qualify me for other benefits like free prescriptions (I'm in England).
There are two calculations in the DWP's recent letter to me. The first gives the weekly payment that I'm entitled to based on my savings, which they describe as the "income-related amount." The second calculation says "However because you are entitled to contribution-based ESA we will pay you £111.65" (which is higher than their first figure).
So my question is: Can I tick the box on prescriptions and similar forms to state that I am in receipt of Incone-Related ESA, or not? I am very confused about what to do.
I hope someone here can shed some light for me - thank you.

Nothing on this board constitutes legal advice - always consult a professional about specific problems

Sarah
If the second figure is higher than the first then you are only receiving Contribution Based ESA and cannot tick the box for ESA(IR) on prescriptions.
You have two alternatives; you can buy a Pre-Payment Certificate or you can apply for an HC1 certificate due to low income, see

Thanks so much Gordon, that's very clear advice.
I will apply for an HC1 certificate.
