Hi All,

Do disabled people on PIP/DLA qualify for the financial assistance by the energy companies for warm home discount? Thank you.

Hi Catfishman

I answered this question on your previous post, the warm home discount (WHD) is not specific for disable people, PIP/DLA are not qualifying benefits to enable someone to claim WHD, you usually have to be in receipt of a Income related benefit such as; IR ESA, PC, UC.

Dear Catfishman,
You can ask Age UK to do a benefits check (they are very kind & discreet) to make sure you are receiving all the money you are entitled to ( & budget advice re switching utilities etc if you want). In my area they can do a home visit. They can also help with grants where richer pensioners have donated their Winter Fuel Payments to others. Turn2Us offer a similar service but I don't know how personal this is.
If your income is below £20,000 pa you can get the Warm Home Discount from the bigger energy companies if you receive DLA or PIP. If you have any problems with them I can strongly recommend the 'Resolver' tool via the Martin Lewis website.
I have no issue with claiming help given the hostile environment to disabled people: I consider it compensation due from the Trolls & DWP. The effect on my health has been profound. After the election result several people have been very kind:I think decent people are horrified by Foodbank Britain.
Best wishes Maggie

Hi there Catfishman,
I have been looking into this as I am reviewing my utility bill. There are differing criteria with each utility company that is part of the scheme. unless you fall into the Core Group ( ie. receive pension credit). It is also something that you have to apply for on an annual basis., note that I have never received a reminder about when to apply from mine.all the companies that I looked at have there own systems, and criteria, application times, and the proviso that you are still with them at the time they pay out the money.
Some accept it if you are the account holder and are applying for a disabled person in your household, but some say that the person applying/ bill-holder, has to be the benefit recipient !!!
They also have limited numbers. I would advise that you read the documentation for company you are with first.
I had no problem finding the information on the websites that I looked at though.
I used a comparison site and it had a filter that allowed me to see which companies were subscribed to the scheme. I think it can also be found on others.
