ESA and councillor allownce was created by ka
Hi,

I’m thinking of standing to be a councillor. How would a councillor’s allowance affect my ESA. I understand this can be classed as permitted work. The councillor’s allowance is £13,300 a year, which is about £255 a week.

I’m on IR ESA with Support a Group component and SDP as I receive PIP Enhanced Rate for both Daily Living and Mobility.

Advice on this greatly appreciated,

ka

It depends on the type of type of ESA you are receiving, for ESA(CB) there may bey a deduction from your ESA, see paragraph 51828 and following and specifically 51833 of

assets.publishing.service.gov.uk/governm...e/843595/dmgch51.pdf

for ESA(IR) the PW rules appear to apply, in which case the amount you quote would exceed the PW limits of £131.50 a week. See paragraph 49081 and following of

assets.publishing.service.gov.uk/governm...e/811555/dmgch49.pdf

For clarification, councillors allowances are not tested any differently to earnings from a job in permitted work, and therefore I’d lose ESA(IR) entitlement if I was elected and received the allowance of circa £13k per annum?

Thanks
