Help to claim universal credit was created by Sassykins
Hi, can you please offer me some advice. My son has severe anxiety and social anxiety, he would be unable to attend the DWP office and talk about his illness or look for work and was only able to claim pip last year with your superb guidance. His GP and myself have persuaded him to claim Universal Credit, how do we get around the job centre visit, he cannot cope with face to face at home or in a jobcentre. I have read of reasonable adjustments being made with ref to the equality act and also me being his representative, I would need to take sick line and his ID to Job centre but I am not clear how to go about things. We have a letter of support from the GP which is a year old but we never used it, can this be used or do I get a new one. He receives pip enhanced and enhanced, the pip was a paperbased assesment. We are in Scotland.

Has he actually received a request to attend at his local JC+ office?

You cannot act on his behalf as you have no legal authority to do so, have you looked at becoming his appointee?

I'm afraid a year old letter is unlikely to be helpful, you should get a new one as soon as you can.

It would be a Reasonable Adjustment under the Equality Act 2010 for the DWP to find an alternative way of verifying your son's identity, perhaps a home visit. perhaps a home visit but you need to be aware that the call centre staff may not be briefed on this option and you may need to escalate the issue to a manager.
