Backdating PIP and change of circumstances? was created by Orm-Irian
Hi, I'm in the process of filling in my PIP form (the B&W booklet is a huge support!). I was last assessed in autumn 2018. I called them in December 2019 to notify them of a change in mobility circumstances (I'm now using a wheelchair), and this triggered a complete reassessment process even though my previous award was good until November 2021.
They said they'd send me the form, but after several weeks nothing had happened, so I called them again and they said "So sorry, the person you spoke to on 12.12 failed to complete the process so the form never got issued. It'll now be dated from today."
My question is: can I reasonably request any increase in benefit be backdated, given they screwed up and cost me an extra month getting reassessed? And if so, how and when should I request this?

Hi Ljos
If you receive an increase in your PIP award it will be from when that decision is made. Many claimants suffer delays in decisions due to inefficient, post problems etc and I'm afraid there's nothing you can do.

Providing it was clear on the phone call that you made in December that you were reporting a Change of Circumstances then the DM should backdate the Effective Date of the Decision to the date of that call and if there is an increase in your award then you should be entitled to back payment of it.
In case you have to do this again or for anybody reading this, we would recommend contacting the DWP in writing and if you can afford it, use a Tracked post so you have proof of the delivery date.

They definitely have it on record that I called them re a change of circumstances on 12.12.19, they could see it on their records. I would normally have written instead of phoning, but my printer wasn't working (handwriting is very hard for me).
