I just got my pip result, and although I have been awarded standard care, I'm a little perplexed about some of the reasoning for not getting the higher rate. It states in my letter that as I can get into a standard car without help, that means I can get in and out a bath with aids. I don't see how getting in a car can be equal to a bath, I have never come across a car where you have to swing your legs from ground height to hip height to get in or out, in a standard sitting position. My car has a nice high seat height and low sill, so yes I can get in and out usually without help, using the A pillar or door to pull up on, but even the assessor in the face to face said I would need help to manoeuvre over the edge of the bath as I cannot move my legs apart that far. I'm not sure about disputing the decision as don't want to end up losing the award as only got 8 points as they also haven't awarded for other things I should have got, such as needing assistance to cook, using medication reminders etc.

Hi superstottie

You are the only one who can decide whether it is worth putting in for a mandatory reconsideration. If you put in for one, it is true that there is risk attached to doing so, but while many people find their awards remain the same and they go onto appeal, some people do get their award upgraded. Only about 17% of MR's are successful whereas 78% of appeals are. If you haven't had the full assessment report, you should ring and ask for it and perhaps that will make your decision whether you go for a mandatory reconsideration or not.

I agree with you that it is strange to equate getting out of a bath with getting in and out of a car. It is the first time I have heard that one!
