Partner who is FT carer being added to cb ESA? was created by lynnmattimoe@gmail.com
Hello
Any advice please.
My partner has become my full time carer and unable to continue working as self employed.
We've been together 20 years and I've read about people claiming for partners on their ESA claim.

I'm in the support group of cb ESA and neither of us have any assets apart from my mortgaged home.

If i was to apply to have my partner on my ESA would i need to be reassessed??
Also would he be able to claim carers?? which he isn't at the minute.

From someone who doesn't understand the benefit system, I do get PIP for 10 years and i understand that, but all we have is my PIP, ESA, small NHS pension to live on in total

Thank you

Hi Lynn M

Remember with the benefit system what you get in one hand is taken away in the other.

Your partner cannot claim Carers Allowance if you only get ESA even in the support group, you can only claim CA if :
1) Your partner spends at least 35 hours a week caring for you,
2) You receive a qualifying benefit; DLA care middle or high, AA, PIP daily living, constant attendence allowance, armed forces independence payment
3) Age of 16 or over
4)| Not earning over £123 per week
5) Not subject to immigration control

Although you say that you get PIP, you can only claim CA if you get the daily living component. You can check by putting your information into one of the online benefit calculators, remember to include your small NHS pension.

If you have any specific questions then please reply to this post and we will do our best to help.

Hi Gary
Yes i get the enhanced component of both parts to PIP, the care and the mobility.

He does care for me over 35 hours a week as I'm stuck living upstairs which is another story, but it takes several hours a day caring for me from him.

He was self employed from home as computer programmer but he couldn't maintain this work as it needs focus and concentration and I've several conditions needing his assistance.

Therefore he doesn't claim CA at the moment and as I said we only have my disability benefits and small NHS pension to live on.
I've read some people add their partners to their ESA and I'm in the cb ESA support group.

I don't want to be reassessed so he can be added to my ESA.
So is the only option for extra income C.A. as I'm terrified I'd be reassessed by Maximus if applying to have him added to ESA and i don't know which one would be the most financially beneficial. We have no family just the 2 of us.
I still have a mortgage in my name only as I was a nurse prior to me becoming disabled.

It may be possible to add your partner to your ESA claim but it will depend on how much your pension is, I would put your information into one of the online benefit calculators to see.

If you are able to add them to your claim then this will not result in your ESA being reassessed.
