PIP was created by Micha
I have had MS for 22 years and for the past 5 or so years I was told it was SPMS - so I duly completed my PIP form with this information and was awarded high rate for both mobility and care. Then at the beginning of last year, I saw a different neurologist who has said my ms is active RRMS with progression due to long term disease!! Anyway my Dad was suddenly taken I’ll and died 10 days later. This has had a devastating impact on my mental health. My question is - do I need to tell DWP about what the latest neurologist thinks? They awarded me PIP for 10 years.

Hi Michelle

The DWP likes to be informed when there is a change in people's condition - ie - if someone is getting better (because a claimant may not be entitled to the same money).

Some people inform the DWP when there is a deterioration in their condition because they are hoping for an improved award.

Then there are people like yourself, whose symptoms have not changed but they have been given a slightly different diagnosis. I'm not a medic but it's easy to see from reputed medical sites that RRMS turns into SPMS. You have seen a different neurologist who has a slightly different view on where you currently are. Who is to say which is correct.

If there is no change in your symptoms that gained the PIP - what is there to tell the DWP? If you choose to do so, it will be called a change in circumstances and will result in your whole claim being reviewed.

I am currently going through ESA reassessment with will have the changed diagnosis on it - am waiting for an assessment. Was supposed to be on 25th February - but they cancelled it a couple of hours before the appointment!! Will this impact PIP - should I do a change of circumstance? I almost feel like pulling out of my ESA claim as I get £9.60 a week and the stress is great. My mental health is so fragile.

Hi MF

In case you are not aware, your real name appears to be showing in the forum, if you want to change this then follow the instructions in the following FAQ

My full name is showing, how can I stop it?

ESA and PIP are quite seperate benefits although there may be an overlap on a few questions.

it is not the amount of money you receive, but some benefits are qualifying benefits which enable you to get additional benefits such as 'warm home discount' from your utility company.

Unlike PIP you cannot request the assessment report until you have had your decision letter. When you receive your decision letter you just ring up and request a copy of the assessors report.
