To help with my mental health recovery I am hoping to do some volunteer work whilst in receipt of contribution based ESA. I know this might go against me when I get reassessed but I believe any type of recovery and proper return to work will be impossible without volunteering first.

I have downloaded the PW1 form so that I can inform the DWP about my volunteer work but I have noticed that they want full details about the company I am going to work for. Does this mean that they contact the company to ask questions about what I am doing there etc? I am quite private with my mental health struggles so don’t like the idea of the company being approached and asked about me. Is this something that is done?

You say that they are asking about the company, it is not normally possible to do volunteer work at a commercial company, work which it would be reasonable to expect would be paid for does not count as voluntary work.

I doubt the DWP will contact the company but I can't guarantee that they won't, it is part and parcel of doing the Permitted Work.

Thank you. It is a charity, I’m just use to using the word company as that’s where I previously worked ;)
