Pip - planning journeys was created by KPPurple
Hi
I’m having trouble with the planning a journey pip descriptor and filling in the paper form. Does it mean going from point A to B by bus or train? I am long cane user and so would use this to walk to my local bus or train. However, I would have to use local bus or train apps to find the train or bus route/number and time of departure. Will I loose points if I use a local bus/train app? I don’t see how else I’d know that information. The guidance seems to be the DWP don’t like people to use apps as anyone can use the apps and so their not disability specific.
Totally confused, can you help?

Nothing on this board constitutes legal advice - always consult a professional about specific problems

Hi KPPurple
The Going Out activity looks at three things.
Planning a route - this is primarily a cognitive or sensory (e.g. blindness) activity. You are being asked about the problems you would have with working out how to get from one place to another, you do not need to be able to follow the route that you are planning.
Undertaking a Journey - this is to do with mental health issues such as agoraphobia and social anxiety and is concerned with you leaving the house to go somewhere, they will be interested in the things that stop you doing this. You need to show that you would suffer "overwhelming psychological distress" to meet the criteria.
Following a route - This activity about the problems you would have navigating a route. So, are there any problems; cognitive, sensory or mental health issues that would prevent you from doing this? This is different from undertaking a journey, in fact, if you cannot undertake a journey then you will not score points for following one and vice versa.
If you say your walking is restricted, you would need to be unable to reliably walk more than 50m to score sufficient points for an award just on the Moving Around activity.

Hi
Yes I’m confused by the planning a route part, is it asking about my abillity to plan a route by walking from point A toB, using public transport or both to do so.Is it asking how I find that information out, I.e. looking information up on a bus route app? Will I loose points if I say I use an app. Totally confused?
I can undertake a route without any distress..
However, I would have issues navigating and flowing a route, I use a long cane for familiar routes eg walking to library and would have visual issues due to glare and at night. For unfamiliar routes with long cane use I would have to be taught these routes. I would also have difficulty finding bus numbers/platforms, I would need assistance to help with this and finding the ticket kiosk. Also, issues if the route changes I’d become anxious that I couldn’t find my way to get back on the route, e.g. road works, bus breaks down,

Hi KPPurple
It is both. The first question I would ask you is, how would you plan to go and see a specialist consultant at hospital for instant?
Do you have specialist equipment to enable you to follow a route on your phone? how do you look up information? you say you have issues navigating and following a route, explain what those issues are and do you need some with you if you have not been there before?
You say that you have difficulties finding bus numbers and ticket kiosk, explain what your difficulties are and what happens when there is a cancellation on route. How can you cope with last minute changes in your schedule?
Remember the assessor does not know you and can only go by what you have written, so you have to paint a picture in words about the difficulties in your everyday life.
