Coronavirus & ESA was created by JJ
Hi Team ,
The government seem to be telling people that they can claim ESA if they are unable to work due to the coronovirus whether it be self isolation reasons or for reasons of their workplace having to close.
But I thought ESA was only claimable once someone's SSP had ran out. As SSP is now payable by the employer & not the government do you know what may happen if the employer is saying they cannot aford to pay the SSP due to their own financial hardship. ? I understand that there is a government plan in place to pay wages for 3 months but I don't think this will apply to all sectors ? Thank you for your help.

I'm not aware of any changes to the ESA rules in regard to SSP,.

So If it is being paid then a person cannot claim ESA, however, if it is not then I think that you can although I cannot guarantee it, it is one of the things that I don't think anybody in the Government has thought of yet. You may need your employer to complete an SSP1 form explaining the payment cannot be made by the employer.
