Sensitive question about disability premiums was created by Luckydog1234
Hello all

A very sensitive subject for me and not something I like to talk about so I will make it quick and to the point. I have mental health issues and claim ESA SG income related & PIP enhanced daily living.

My dad, who i live with, looks after me and i cannot see me ever moving out. As i live with someone over age of 18 i get enhanced disability premium, i was starting to worry about what if something happened to my dad and what would happen with money etc and realised i would be entitled to severe disability premium instead of enhanced D P - is this something that is changed for you automatically, or would i have to ring DWP and explain the situation at the time? Please tell me i wouldn't. I live in fear daily of what is going to happen to me if that happens and i would not need DWP on the phone on top of everything else. As i say, its a sensitive subject and its getting me even more anxious thinking about it now, so i will stop the post now and keep an eye out for your comments.

Hi Josh

You receive the enhanced disability premium as you are in the support group of ESA and you receive a qualifying benefit, PIP daily living at the enhanced rate.

The enhanced disability premium can be awarded in addition to any disability premium or severe disability premium that maybe payable.

As you live with your father, unless he also receives a qualifying benefit such as MR DLA/ DL PIP or AA then you would not be eligible to claim SDP, if your father died and you lived on your own then you would be eligible to claim SDP plus EDP.

Thank you for your response Gary.

In the horrible event something happened to my dad, how would I claim SDP plus EDP? I never specifically applied to claim EDP on top of my ESA, it just appeared on the ESA Award letter, so how would I claim SDP in the event something horrible happened?

You would need to contact the DWP office dealing with your ESA and ask for the SD Premium to be added, this will require the completion of an IS10 form which is about your living circumstances, it should be possible to do this while you are on the phone, alternatively, you can ask for a paper copy of the form.
