Severe Disability Premium Inquiry was created by patman
I am currently on my partner's ESA claim they receive support group. Partner is disable getting PIP enhance on both. I have been their career for several years but have recently had disabilities and problems myself it now seems that I will be receiving pip myself for care and mobility. I have been advised to stop claiming the career allowance once pip case manager makes a decision on my own pip because I don't feel that I can no longer care for my partner doing 35 hours a week as we both have a career that comes and helps us both now. My question is we have been advice to claim the severe disability premium at the couples rate once I stop claiming careers allowance, once a decision has been made on my pip with a start date can my partner claim severe disability premium single rate to be back dated from when my pip will first start? Also Would this affect my partner's ESA or PIP as in a reassessment for them? Do I just need to phone them to tell them or do I have to put a claim form in? I know it's complicated because I am asking for premiums that I don't know if I qualify for them to be paid at a single rate from when my partner's pip starts and then I am asking once I stop caring for a couple's rate premium to be paid. Is this all correct as I am totally unsure. Thank you.

Hi patman
The SDP became payable from the first day that all three of the following applied.
1. You had an award of ESA and we’re receiving or were entitled to receive Income Related ESA.
2. You had an award of PIP Daily Living
3. You met the criteria for payment of the SD Premium, namely that you lived alone or were considered to be living alone and no one receives Carers Allowance (CA) against your PIP award or as a couple you can qualify if both you and your partner get a qualifying benefit (PIP daily living).
Until your Carers Allowance stops you will not be eligible to claim SDP, so if you are successful and your PIP gets backdated to the date you applied you would not be eligible to claim SDP as you are still in receipt of CA.
Once you are in receipt of PIP and you stop claiming CA then you should apply for SDP. www.gov.uk/disability-premiums/eligibility
Your husband should contact the DWP office dealing with his ESA claim and ask for the Premium as a couple to be put into payment, this will require him to complete an IS10 form, it should be possible to do this over the phone.

Thank you for the reply could I just ask a follow up question.

Providing your partner is receiving or entitled to receive Income Related ESA, then in your present situation you would receive the single rate for the SD Premium from the date of your PIP award and the Carers Premium.
If you close the CA claim then you become entitled to the couples rate of the SD Premium but you would no longer receive NI Credits that count towards a full State Pension so you should figure this into your calculations. You can purchase these from HMRC.
