Hi Jane52
People who can't work their normal hours because of coronavirus (COVID-19) will still receive their usual tax credits payments. www.gov.uk/government/news/tax-credits-c...ours-due-to-covid-19.
Everyone now lives in a Universal Credit area, the last area to go full service was November last year.
The requirement for both legacy Contribution Based ESA and New Style ESA is a minimum of 26 weeks of NI Contributions in one of the two Tax Years 2018-19 or 2019-20 AND at least 50 weeks of NI Contributions or NI Credits in both the Tax Years 2018-19 and 2019-20. There are some exceptions to the First Contribution Condition. www.gov.uk/employment-support-allowance/eligibility.

I'm sorry but your Tax Years are wrong, the rule is the two complete TYs preceding the current Benefit Year. The current BY is 2020 so the TYs are 2017-18 and 2018-19.

Thank you Gary and Gordan
I find the tax years confusing. I have already submitted my tax return for 2019/2020 so I am o.k for that tax year and several tax years preceding this. Because of being in shielding group am needing to do more online work and also have less work because of Covid. If I find I cannot tolerate this much online work, as it does affect my disability and I want to apply for contributory esa in what tax year do I need to apply.. Do I need to apply in the tax year 2020/2021 so there are no gaps.
Would it be legacy based esa I would apply for if going this route as on working tax credit. Do not understand difference between legacy based esa and new style esa.
Many thanks for clarification on above points.

Claims are made in the calendar year, there is a rule about when this starts but I'll not confuse you with additional information.
The years used for eligibility are the two complete Tax Years preceding the year of claim.
So for a claim in 2020, the Tax Years that will be used are 2017-18 and 2018-19. The Tax year 2019-20 will not be used and 2020-21 will not be usable until 2022.
You cannot make a new claim for legacy ESA, it will be New Style ESA which is a Contribution Based benefit only.
AS Gary has said, the requirement to do a minimum number of hours for WTC has been suspended, so you should still receive this.
NS ESA is not a substitute for WTCs, for NS ESA you will need to provide evidence that you are no longer Fit for Work.
