ESA Extension? was created by Kay
My ESA benefit started in September 2019. I had a letter in February 2020 to say I had been placed in the Work Related Group and that I would get a personal advisor to help me look for work. Then Covid-19 happened and I didn’t get an advisor, nor any help to manage my disability or look for work. I have heard nothing more. Will I automatically get an extension to my ESA or will it still come to an end this September? Any advice would be much appreciated. Thank you.

ESA s an indefinite award so you will remain in the WRAG group until a new Decision is made, the only restriction will be if you are receiving Contribution Based ESA or New Style ESA; in which case your payments are limited to 365 days, however, if you are receiving ESA(CB) (not NS ESA) and you meet the eligibility criteria then you can receive Income Related ESA when your EA(CB) stops. For NS ESA you will need to claim Universal Credit.

I am on contribution based ESA, as I had paid NI contributions for the previous 2yrs before receiving ESA. I was just wondering though, because I’ve had no help in looking for work since Covid-19 and haven’t been able to take part in work-focused interviews, will this not be taken into account? Will an extension to the 365 days be given so that this help can be given once it is safe to attend an interview? Many thanks.

I'm afraid not, the relevant legislation looks at only one thing; the time that you have spent not in the Support Group.

Thank you for confirming that Gordon. What criteria would I have to meet to receive income related ESA? - and would this happen automatically - would the DWP write to let me know? Thank you.
