my son is on esa and pip, just extended, and is worse than when he started on this 3 years ago. We are in our 70s and care for our son while also trying to isolate. I know the current situation is a nigthmare for everyone and he is really struggling, worse with his depression and anxiety but also very much with the physiaca side of coming to our home to pickup shopping, clothes and ffod etc He gets so overly exhausted with trying to hauling items back and forth and we are we are wondering if it would be possible for him to leanr to drive through friends? He isn't going to be using buses and while he has a bike, it takes too much of him phyiscally trring to get it up to his flat etc, It is under a mile along a very quiet road between our houses and he would only really use for this purpose, not sure how it would go but wondering if there would be benefits affects if we managed to get him a cheap old car and driving license to help cope?
From a benefit point of view, it is not relevant and will have no effect on his benefits. If he receives PIP Enhanced Mobility then he can use this to lease a car from Motability.
But, be aware that assessors can make unreasonable assumptions about claimants who regularly drive so when he is next assessed he/you will need to explain how he manages this and is still limited in regard to the PIP activities.
