light touch PIP review and motability? was created by Nostromo
hi, first time poster here, please bear with me im not the best at describing what problem i have but ill try my best.

i'm wondering if someone can help me with a question i have, my mother won a reward for full PIP mobility back in 2018 and she is over pension age, i remember when amber rudd was the dwp secretary she said that pensioners who have pip will only have a "light touch" review every 10 years, the problem is we are trying to get my mother a motability car, the motability scheme starts back up on the 1st July due to covid 19, we looked at the original award duration and it runs out in April of 2021, to get mobility you need atleast 12 months before your award runs out to qualify for it so i believe she only has about 8 months left on the reward, so what id like to know is, will her award have been automatically extended to the 10 years light touch already and she will be able to apply for motabilty or would she have to wait until a month before the award is due to end for it to be extended and therefore not qualify for motability scheme at this time?

if you need any other details please feel free to ask

thanks!

The DWP was converting most but not all awards held by claimants who had reached State Retirement Age to On-Going awards with a Light Touch review, this was being done when the award came up for reassessment initially a year before the award ended but more recently six months before.

Since the pandemic, with most assessments suspended, they have been extending awards by six months, it's unclear at the moment whether this practice will continue.

So, I would not expect them to look at your mother's claim any earlier than October 2020 and it could be later and that may just be to extend it.

I realise that this does not help with her Motability lease, I would suggest you call them to see what her options are, it may be possible to extend the current lease until things become clearer.
