Depression was created by Jude
Hi,
My husband took early retirement due to illness. He has worked all his life but was under severe stress and was disgnosed with anxiety, depression and psychosis.
He is able to receive his private pension now as he is 55.
Two years ago he felt well again & returned to work to a new job, with less hours.
However, with COVID 19 his depression has returned and it is worse than previous. He now receives SSP.
Is there any benefit he could claim as he is in receipt of a private pension?

Thank you

There are two benefits he may be able to claim;

- PIP, which is paid to cover the extra expenses that a disabled person might incur, PIP will not be affected by his pension.

- New Style ESA. He cannot make a claim until his SSP ends but can claim in anticipation of it ending. He will need to have a minimum of 50 weeks of NI Contributions in both of the Tax Years 2017-18 and 2018-19. There is an £85/week disregard for any pension followed by £1/week deduction for every £2 in excess of the £85.

Both benefits have criteria he will need for an award, our PIP and ESA/UC Claim guides explain this and how to explain his problems in completing a number of activities. see
