Leaving education-will it mean move from ESA to UC was created by AnnaGrant
My 21 year old disabled daughter is finishing her college course on Friday 17 July. In September she will be on a social care funded Life Long Learning programme at the same college, 39 weeks a year, 5 days a week. We are in Sheffield.
She is in the support group for ESA.
Will she have to move to UC, and when?
If she moves to UC will she be worse off? She is on £130.65 p/w and gets free prescriptions.
Our social worker can't answer this question.
Many thanks

Welcome to the forum, you might want to have a look at the following FAQ which explains where everything is
Welcome to Benefits and Work
In case you are not aware, your real name appears to be showing in the forum, if you want to change this then follow the instructions in the following FAQ
My full name is showing, how can I stop it?
Your daughter stopping or starting education will not require a transfer to Universal Credit although she should check whether she would actually receive more on UC, she can put her information into one of the online benefit calculators to see
www.gov.uk/benefits-calculators
At some time all Income Related ESA claimants will be transferred to UC but not at the moment.
As an aside, is the DWP aware she is in education as some grants can be treated as income and reduce the amount of ESA that is payable?

Hello Gordon. Thank you for your reply and information. AnnaGrant is not my real name, so no worries there. My daughter is in further education and not in receipt of any grant. I have done a test in the past which shows that she might be better off under UC, but I don't trust the benefit and she is staying on income related ESA if that is OK while she is on social care, not education, funding. I used Benefits and Work guides to submit our DLA to PIP and the ESA and got enhanced rate PIP care and mobility, and support group for ESA. Very happy with your support.
