DLA Review for 15 year old was created by raindaisy
Hi
I have a family member who fostering their son for the last 7 years. He was badly burnt at the age of 12 weeks old. They had to fight to get him DLA , he gets LR care and LR mobility . His care needs have increased 10 fold as he has got older because of the multiple skin grafting operations he is undergoing every year, and the nerve damage , pain , in addtion he has a large mass of water on the brain and this also increased with age , affecting all things cognitive, his prognosis is not brilliant .He should have had his dla reviewed ages ago , but they were always put off by the dwp and social worker. He turns 16 next May .
Whats the current situation for reviews for children with DLA atm ? I want to help them but feel strongly , it is wrong to wait until he is 16 when he has to apply for PIP . His mobility has deteriorated and because of grafting, can not use a wheel chair on his own.
Any suggestions where to start? they have just not asked me as i have my own issues .
TIA

Hi raindaisy

There is nothing to stop your family member putting in for a change of circumstances and sending in information about how their son's needs have changed, backed up with medical evidence. This will then be looked at and they will decide what type of an assessment needs to be done. How long this will take, I'm afraid I can't tell you. This is something they would need to ask.

Just to add to BIS's advice, if he is 16 next year then he should expect to be invited to claim PIP shortly afterwards, so you need to consider what impact it will be having to do two assessments closely together.
