Claim careers allowance or not was created by Jennifer
Hi Gordon and Team,
Just a query really, I currently claim income related ESA and am in the support group, I also get SDP added on as both my elderly parents are now in receipt of Attendance Allowance.
Whilst I don’t do manual caring for them both I do help on a very regular basis with banking, paperwork, cleaning ladies rota, gardener, telephone calls, medical supply orders and collections, meal planning etc etc the list goes on.
I’m told by my counselling lady I may well qualify for careers allowance, I’m not so sure and I wouldn’t want to rock the boat so to speak so would be very grateful for your view on this?
Kind regards

Nothing on this board constitutes legal advice - always consult a professional about specific problems

There is no clear definition of what "caring" duties are required for Carers Allowance but if you look at the benefits that enable a claim, Attendance Allowance in your case then they are all about what is called bodily functions such as preparing food, washing and dressing (there are others).
Most of the activities you mention don't really come under this heading so I have to say that I do not think that you fulfil the requirement, there is also a need for you to be providing at least 35 hours of "care" a week and I'm not sure from your post that you spend this much time caring.
Also, this is only for one parent, not both as CA can only be claimed against one persons AA.

Thank you Gordon that’s very helpful, I don’t think I will bother unless my health improves drastically and I’m able to help them more.
