Esa contribution limit was created by KPPurple
I am currently on contribution esa and as I understand it can only be claimed for one year?
What happens after the year is up? Can I no longer claim esa?
Will I have to pay back what I was entitled to?

There is only a one year limit if you are not in the Support Group, if you are then you can continue to receive your ESA(CB) as long as you meet the criteria for the SG.
If you have spent 365 days outside of the SG then you lose entitlement to payment of your ESA(CB), you will not have to pay anything back.
If you are also entitled to Income Related ESA then this can be paid as a substitute for your ESA(CB).

Hi Gordon
I am awaiting my assessment currently, but when I applied for ESA I received a letter which said that I could only claim ESA contribution based for 365 days. I was on ESA previously a few years ago, but I don't remember which group I was put into. So don't know where this leaves me.
If the assessment doesn't have the outcome I desire, will I have to pay any contributions back?
I won't meet the criteria for income based ESA

Providing your previous claim is separated by more than 12 weeks from this one then any time that you spent outside of the SG during that previous claim should not be counted for this one.
If you are not awarded ESA then you will not have to pay back any of the payments you have received while you were in the Assessment phase.

The letter I received said contribution based esa would only be awarded until 2021. There is at least 3 years between my current and previous claim

Hi KPPurple
As Gordon has stated below 'Providing your previous claim is separated by more than 12 weeks from this one then any time that you spent outside of the SG during that previous claim should not be counted for this one'.
The requirement for both legacy Contribution Based ESA and New Style ESA is a minimum of 26 weeks of NI Contributions in one of the two Tax Years 2017-18 and 2018-19 AND at least 50 weeks of NI Contributions or NI Credits in both the Tax Years 2017-18 and 2018-19. There are some exceptions to the First Contribution Condition.
If you are awarded Limited Capability for Work then the NS ESA is only payable for a year, if you receive Limited Capability for Work Related Activity then it is payable for as long as you meet the criteria.
Our UC and ESA claim guide explains the criteria that you will need to meet.
