Hi, I’ve been claiming ESA for about 3 years and I’m in support group. I’ve recently been awarded standard rate pip. My question is I’m going to be coming off ESA soon as my house is being sold so will have savings so will no longer be eligible. My query is I need to continue with pip because I know it isn’t means tested. Will I have to inform DWP?

To answer your question, no you do not need to inform the PIP department about your savings, as you have said PIP is not a means tested benefit.

With regard to your ESA.

The savings limit is £16,000, amounts below this will reduce your ESA but won't necessarily stop it,

If you are entitled to Contribution Based ESA then this will still be payable even if your ESA(IR) is not.

The money can be disregarded for at least six months providing it is your intention to buy a new house.

Hi, I’m not going to buy a house but go into rented as wouldn’t be able to get a mortgage.

Hi Nanny

As Gordon has stated below, if you have over £16,000 in savings then you will not be eligible to claim any means tested benefits. Depending on your age, any savings below £16,000 you may be accessed as having tariff income: www.gov.uk/government/publications/benef...-2020#capital-limits

A claimant who has more than £16,000 in capital will not be entitled to any housing benefit. This is known as the 'upper capital limit'. This limit does not apply to a claimant who is in receipt of the guarantee pension credit. www.gov.uk/pension-credit
