Hi Mrs T, do take my comments with caution as I am not a moderator or trained. In my thinking, if your depression and anxiety affect your ability to carry out any/some of the descriptors, eg you might need prompting to do something, whether or not you get that help, then the fact your mental health has "standard" medication should be proof you do need help and therefore deserve points, not an excuse to score you less or zero on that item. Our daughter's assessor's report was chock full of things like that such as claiming her Tramadol was moderate pain medication -NHS own website says it is for severe pain which I have quoted in my very polite challenge letter. Can't tell you the outcome as I don't know yet.

Hello Gordon, thank you for your reply. Dwp have refused my application already, I got the letter and report at the weekend. My counselling was for sexual abuse that I received as a child and rape as a young adult, and that I have trust and anger issues. It was with an nhs service over the phone, 1 hour weekly, so I thought I was speaking to a specialist?? I was shielding due to being on the extremely vulnerable group, so no face to face due to COVID!
Yes I wasn’t planning on trying to discredit the up, but point out that because I have visited the hospital for the past ten years and know and trust my consultant, I feel safe. I don’t go out socialising, so the only places I go on my own is to the hospital or work, otherwise I always go elsewhere accompanied.

If you are working then I'm afraid you will struggle to score for Going Out, your best bet is to make a case that you cannot follow the route to an unfamiliar place.

The first stage to challenging a Decision is for you to request a Mandatory Reconsideration, this needs to be done in writing to the DWP, within one month of the Decision, to the office that dealt with your claim, have a look at our PIP MR & Appeal guide for details of the process, the PIP area also has template letters that you can use to make the request with.

You should contact the DWP for a copy of the assessment report if you have not already done so, I would phone them but again follow up the request in writing. Once you have the assessment report you will have a better understanding of how the DWP Decision Maker has come to their conclusions and will then be able to argue against them.
Your primary task is to show that you meet the criteria, there are many reasons you may have failed, you need to address each of these but don't get bogged down in criticising the assessment report unless you can clearly show that it is incorrect, it is a lot easier to argue the facts of the situation;
"the assessor recorded that I walked 50m, I did but they have failed to document that I had to stop every 10m for a rest due to breathlessness"
than their opinions
"based on my observations of the claimant walking I believe that they can reliably walk more than 200m.
When you have a better idea of the issues with your claim, come back to the forum and we will do our best to help.
