How to Request own Recording PIP phone assessment? was created by Parent101
Hi,
I want to be able to record a PIP telephone interview and publically state and declare this in advance so that the private DWP-appointed assessors are aware of this, rather than seek to covertly record it.
Is there a formal process that generates a written Audit trail so that I can request of the DWP in advance to declare and make my own recording of a PIP telephone assessment?
Are there any legal documents/ministers statements/etc that explicitly state that I have a right to make my own recordings?
I note that a formal agreement has to be signed and that there might be some sort of restrictions on what types of equipment that can be used.
Is there a copy of the current version of the formal Asos or Capita agreements so that I can see what it says?
Is there a formal specification as to what type of recording equipment/Software is permitted and isn't permitted, e.g. Computers, handheld devices, mobile phones etc?
It would be useful if this information could be collated and maintained in a single document.
Thanks.

Hi Parent101
You can request for the assessment services to record it - and they may well tell you they don't have the services to do so. This comes down to the availability of recording facilities and available assessors. Not all assessor agree to be recording and they are not legally obliged to agree.
If you insist on a recording then they will probably tell you that you will have to wait until a face to face assessment can take place and no one knows when that will be. If they think they have sufficient evidence they might look into doing a paper-based assessment - but this is not given and it is unlikely to be done except on rare occasions as they won't want to open the floodgates of lots of claimants saying they want paper-based if they can't have a recording.
If you say that you are going to record the assessment yourself - the assessment won't take place because it would be too easy for claimants to tamper with the recordings. You will find if you try that this is something that is not open to discussion.
So there is guidance on recordings in our guides when face to face assessments were carried out - but not now. We suggest that people make covert recordings for their own record and that can be done in any method available to you.

I do understand that I would have to seek agreement in advance prior to the assessment, and would not be allowed to seek it at the time of the assessment itself.
Given the number of problems people have reported with these assessments, it would appear contrary to natural justice for the assessors themselves to be allowed to refuse to allow themselves to be recorded, if this were to be requested in advance.
Are there no official guidelines on this?
And again, are there any documents which specify which types of recording devices or equipement can and cannot be used?

Hi Parent101
Whether you ask a week before an assessment or on the day of the assessment you will not be allowed to record the assessment and if they become aware you are recording it the assessment will be stopped immediately.
Contact the assessment services and ask them if you can have a copy for any guidelines they have for claimants with regard to the recording.
When they were doing face to face recordings - you could not use any digital recordings (like on a mobile phone). People used to use two single recording devices or a double one with newly purchased cassette tapes - which had to be unwrapped in the presence of the assessor and at the end of the process, one tape was given to the assessor. A lot of people had difficulties in getting the recording devices. No particular brand has ever been listed - it was something a claimant sorted to themselves. Information about recordings was sent to claimants when assessments took place.
Phone assessments are different - if you want to try and see if a specific document exists then you will need to phone and ask. All I can do is reiterate that you will not be given permission to record your assessment which is why people make covert recordings. Is it unfair - yes, but that is the current system. But it's your right to try and fight it - if you want to.
